The College of Agriculture’s Departments of Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences and Animal Sciences (60/40 split) at Auburn University are seeking candidates for a joint position of Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist- Animal Systems Environmental Specialist. This position will be housed in the College of Agriculture’s Department of Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences on the Auburn University campus in Auburn, AL. The incumbent will work collaboratively with scientists in the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station (AAES) in pursuit of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System (ACES) mission. ACES is the primary Extension organization for Alabama A&M University and Auburn University. ACES is dedicated to delivering relevant research-based educational programs to improve quality of life and economic well-being of Alabamians. This position will provide Extension programming that support animal producers across the state of Alabama. The expected start date is March 1, 2017.

Responsibilities: This is a 12-month tenure track position with 75% extension and 25% research responsibilities. The successful candidate will develop and lead a nationally recognized Extension program in the areas of environmentally sound and sustainable animal (livestock and poultry) waste management systems. Applied research and Extension programming will develop and deliver technologies for livestock and poultry producers resulting in best management practices and tools, while additionally enhancing land, air and water quality for Alabama citizens. Developed tool and technologies are expected to be novel for all livestock and poultry producers. As a team member, this position will also provide training to environmental management professionals in Alabama. The incumbent is expected to effectively support and work across Extension teams (Animal Science and Forages, Agronomy and Poultry), agency personnel, and producer organizations.

Research responsibilities include developing an applied research program in environmentally sound waste management from livestock and poultry production systems that will lead to development and implementation of best animal management practices for protecting quality of water, soil and air resources. The successful candidate is expected to secure extramural funding in support of the Extension and research programs, work with other faculty members in a multidisciplinary team environment, advise graduate students, and publish research findings in referred scientific journals.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications: Minimum qualifications include an earned Ph.D. in soil, environmental sciences or related field with an emphasis on animal waste and environmental agriculture. Knowledge of animal waste management as involved with animal production (livestock and poultry) systems is essential. The successful candidate must also possess documented evidence of energetic leadership and innovative thinking. Additionally, they must also demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively with colleagues across disciplines; they must possess excellent interpersonal skills to effectively interact with diverse audiences and demonstrate the ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English; and demonstrate proficiency in Word, PowerPoint, Excel and social media tools. The incumbent must meet eligibility requirements for work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the term of employment.

Desired Qualifications

Desired qualifications include extensive practical knowledge of and experience in animal waste management and environmentally sound production systems. Prior experience with Extension programming or working with farmers is also desired.
