The College of Agriculture’s Departments of Animal Sciences and Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences (60/40 split) at Auburn University are seeking candidates for a joint position of Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist- Forage Agronomist. This position will be housed in the College of Agriculture’s Department of Animal Sciences on the Auburn University campus in Auburn, AL. The incumbent will work collaboratively with scientists in the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station (AAES) in pursuit of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System (ACES) mission. ACES is the primary Extension organization for Alabama A&M University and Auburn University. ACES is dedicated to delivering relevant research-based educational programs to improve quality of life and economic well-being of Alabamians. This position will provide Extension programming that support forage producers across the state of Alabama. The position is available January 1, 2017.

Responsibilities: This is a 12-month tenure-track position with 75% Extension and 25% research responsibilities. The successful candidate will develop and lead a nationally recognized Extension program that is focused on providing unbiased, research-based information on forage production for livestock and associated ecosystem services. This position will develop and deliver information to Regional Extension Agents and producers on sustainable and profitable forage production systems. Methodology for information delivery will focus on the development of print and web-based decision tools. Emphasis will be placed on modern digital communications and the development of alternative educational outlets. The incumbent will be an integral part of the ACES Animal Sciences-Forage Team, and will provide leadership in the development of educational training materials for use by Extension agents. The successful candidate will work closely with commodity groups, state, and federal agencies to improve the reach of educational information to stakeholders. The incumbent will also recruit and train graduate students.

Research responsibilities include conducting an applied research program in the area of forage production; specifically, evaluation of warm- and cool-season forages for Alabama conditions, soil-plant interactions, forage establishment, forage fertilization and plant nutrient requirements, interaction of pest management with forage quality, grazing management and stored forage production (hay, baleage, silage, etc.). The applied research program will be in support of Extension activities with the focus on applied research and investigation into forage management and production recommendations. The candidate is expected to secure extramural funding in support of the Extension and research programs, work with other faculty members in a multidisciplinary team environment, advise graduate students, and publish research findings in refereed scientific journals.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications: Minimum qualifications include an earned Ph.D. in agronomy, animal sciences, or a related field of animal agriculture. The successful candidate will have a background in forage agronomy and production. Documented evidence of individual and/or collaborative research resulting in peer-reviewed publications is also required. Candidates must also demonstrate evidence of energetic leadership and innovative thinking, have excellent interpersonal skills, have excellent communication skills and demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively with faculty, students and industry to develop collaborative research and Extension programs. The incumbent must meet eligibility requirements for work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the term of employment.

Desired Qualifications

Desired qualifications include extensive practical knowledge of and experiences in forages and animal agriculture production system and prior experience with Extension programming or working with farmers.
